Just think about it for a second, if Gyms truly worked, everyone would be skinny. the simple fact is they are often overcrowded so you can't do what you want to, you don't want to look stupid in front of those who look like the know what they are doing, and more often than not the programme is too easy, too boring or is a one shoe fits all scenario.
